C 9 H 18 N 2 O 4 M.W. 218.25 Meprobamate Tablets USP 200 mg and 400 mg for oral administration contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate and pregelatinised starch.

Meprobamate is a carbamate derivative which has been shown in animal studies to have effects at multiple sites in the central nervous system including the thalamus and limbic system.

Preserve in well closed container.

Meprobamate — marketed as Miltown by Wallace Laboratories and Equanil by Wyeth, among others — is a carbamate derivative used as an anxiolytic drug.

A December 1955 study of 101 patients at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield, Mississippi, found meprobamate useful in the alleviation of "mental symptoms." Three percent of the patients made a complete recovery, 29% were greatly improved, and 50% were somewhat better. The disclosures came at a special scientific meeting at the Barbizon Plaza Ho in New York City, at which Aldous Huxley addressed an evening session. He predicted the development of many chemicals "capable of changing the quality of human consciousness", in the next few years.

Talk to your doctor if you need to stop treatment with meprobamate. Do not stop taking meprobamate suddenly if you have been taking it for several weeks. Stopping suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms and make you uncomfortable.

Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking meprobamate. Use alcohol cautiously.

Meprobamate is used to treat anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. Meprobamate is in a class of medications called tranquilizers. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow for relaxation.
